Not Naughty — Just Overwhelmed? Understanding Sensory Processing Difficulties in Children
Sensory processing difficulties in children can often be misunderstood as naughty behaviour... "She screams every time I wash her hair."...
SPOT Allied Health began with a shared dream between two Hong Kong-born, Australian-trained therapists: Vanessa, a speech pathologist, and Ivan, an occupational therapist.
After years of working across Sydney’s health and education systems, they saw a recurring problem — many families, especially those from multilingual and culturally diverse backgrounds, were missing out on the support they truly needed.
Sometimes it was due to language barriers.
Sometimes it was a lack of flexibility.
Sometimes, they simply didn’t know where to turn.
So, Vanessa and Ivan created SPOT: a therapy service designed to be accessible, inclusive, and compassionate for every client.
“We wanted to build a service where families feel seen, heard, and respected — no matter where they come from or what language they speak.”
therapy into homes, schools, and community settings
English, Mandarin, and Cantonese
family-centred, culturally responsive care
NDIS, Support-at-Home program, Medicare, and private clients
on real-life progress - not just reports
Vanessa and Ivan noticed families — especially migrant and bilingual households — struggling to access therapy that truly supported them.
The dream was born.
The vision became a plan: building workflows, trialing software, designing forms, crafting service templates — all while still seeing clients full-time.
SPOT officially launched across Greater Sydney, offering multilingual, mobile therapy built on trust, flexibility, and heart.
